Your first week back at the gym

Choose when to train, record your sets and plan your next visit.

Published . 4 min read.

Start with a gym visit you can fit into your week. Record what you do so you can refer to it next time. You do not need to return to your old training schedule immediately.

Start with the time you actually have

Choose a realistic window for your first visit, including travelling and changing. If you have half an hour on Tuesday, plan a session that fits. Put your kit somewhere obvious and check the gym's opening times. If the equipment or layout is unfamiliar, ask staff for an introduction.

Consider a second visit later in the week if it fits your schedule. In Fit With a Plan, training dates are optional: you can open a programme session on the day that works.

Choose a starting point that fits today

Tell the app about your current experience and available equipment. Use weights that suit your current ability, even if you lifted more before your break. Review the proposed exercises before starting and ask qualified gym staff for help with unfamiliar movements or equipment.

In Train, you can start a programme session, choose Start empty workout, or open Generate a workout and select your focus, time and equipment. Generated workouts have editable sets and do not assume a lifting weight. These are planning tools; they cannot watch your technique or assess an injury.

If you have been inactive for some time, or have a medical condition or concern, the NHS advises speaking to your GP before starting. Choose activity and intensity appropriate to your current fitness. NHS activity guidance.

Record what you do, as you do it

For a lifting set, record the actual repetitions and weight. If you change an exercise, update the session. Only mark sets you have completed.

Use Save progress while you train and Finish workout when you are done. Finishing is a separate action from saving. If you opened an empty workout accidentally, you can cancel it. Only finish workouts you have done.

Leave room for movement outside the gym

Gym visits are one part of an active week. A walk that fits an ordinary journey may be easier to repeat than adding another formal session. If you are able to walk and are currently less active, build distance gradually. The NHS gives a brisk ten-minute walk as one way to contribute to weekly activity. NHS walking guidance.

For adults aged 19 to 64, NHS guidance includes at least 150 minutes of moderate activity weekly and strengthening work on at least two days. Build up gradually towards these amounts. NHS activity guidance.

Make one decision for next week

Look back at what you recorded. Which time worked? Which equipment was available? What would make the next visit simpler? Keep the times and exercises that worked, and adjust what made it difficult to train.

Explore the workout planner. Fit With a Plan includes a 14-day free period from registration, with no card required. Membership is £7.99/month only if you choose to subscribe.
